    • Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA)

PIAA is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation organized on a membership basis. All of PIAA's members are schools. They include almost all of the public and many of the private junior high/middle schools and senior high schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Generally stated, the purpose and function of PIAA is to develop and enforce rules, (which are authorized or adopted by the member schools), and to regulate interscholastic athletic competition.

NCAA College Freshman Athletic Eligibility Requirements

To academically qualify to participate in athletics at the Division I or Division II level you must do the following:

      • Take challenging, college bound courses. Check with your guidance counselor or online at: www.ncaaclearinghouse.net for a complete list of approved courses.
      • Before you begin your senior year, complete the Clearinghouse Registration online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net See payment instructions on web site.
      • Important: Your official academic eligibility is determined by the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse. An athlete cannot tryout, participate or receive an athletic scholarship from an NCAA Division I or II school until they are declared academically eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse.
      • Division I or II "Qualifier" - This means the athlete may practice, compete and receive an athletic scholarship as a freshman.

      Requirements:

      1) Graduation from high school

      2) Complete at least 14 high school core academic courses

      3) Have a 2.3 grade-point average (based on a 4.0 scale) and a combined score on the SAT verbal, math, and writing sections or a sum score on the ACT based on the following qualifier index scale available online at www.ncaa clearinghouse.net.

For the Class of 2016 and beyond...the initial eligibility requirements are changing. Check out the changes at: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/eligibility_center/Quick_Reference_Sheet.pdf

      NAIA Athletic Eligibility Requirements

For any athlete who wished to play sports at the NAIA level, the process of being declared eligible to play was, in the past, as easy as being accepted to a school. If the athlete met the academic and behavioral requirements for that college, then they had sufficiently met the NAIA eligibility requirements.

As of September 1, 2010, however, the NAIA now requires all college-bound athletes to register with the newly formed NAIA Clearinghouse. Before being declared eligible to play at an accredited NAIA college, athletes must now go to the clearinghouse website and submit certain personal information as well as test scores and transcripts to be cleared to play.

      Testing and Eligibility Requirements

To be deemed eligible for participation in NAIA sports, an athlete must achieve a minimum score of 860 on the SAT, a minimum of 18 on the ACT, finish in the top half of his/her graduating class, and maintain a GPA of 2.00. By satisfying any TWO of these requirements, an athlete will be deemed eligible to play in the NAIA. The test score that an athlete submits to the NAIA website must be achieved on the same test.

***This is NOT the NCAA Clearing House. For further information contact visit the NAIA Clearinghouse. Students may also contact their guidance counselor for additional information.
